Hope and the High Holy Days

When we still feel the blistering heat of summer, we find ourselves looking forward to the High Holy Days. However, as America struggles with hard times, we hear the expression “have faith,” repeated in news stories and whenever we are enjoying dinners, services, and get togethers with family. When difficult times happen, we find ourselves turning more to our beliefs. We explore the possibility of faith and forgiveness, and we need to believe in something bigger than ourselves.

 Sisterhood teaches us to be the light that is forever shining in our households. As the High Holy Days approach, we strive to draw closer to our faith, and we pray that Adonai will help us find the path that leads us to the fulfillment of our journey. Above all, we welcome the new year with hope for a brighter, better tomorrow.  As Emily Dickinson wrote, “hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul and sings the tune without the words and never stops at all. I’ve heard it in the chilliest land and on the strangest sea, yet never in extremity it asks a crumb of me.” 

In preparation for the most spiritual time of the year, I have been reading Have a Little Faith by Mitch Albom. His discussions with different religious leaders have prompted deep reflection, and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning more about belief, forgiveness, and hope.
